6- Hymns- The Love of God
There is a view that almost daily takes my breath away. Growing up in a land locked provience- the ocean was far out of reach. We would see it once or twice each year on vacation if we were able.
Now living in Florida, we are blessed to are by the water and get to look into its vastness and the sky that is above each day.
'Could we with ink the ocean fill
and were the skies of parchment made,
were ev’ry stalk on earth a quill
and ev’ry man a scribe by trade,
to write the love of God above
would drain the ocean dry;
nor could the scroll contain the whole,
tho' stretched from sky to sky.'
That is my favorite imagery in any hymn or song every written.
The hymn uses the vastness of the ocean and the sky, and makes an argument that even still both are not great enough to transcribe the magnitude of the love of God.
Our human love can be great at times. I think of how my heart expanded and fierce love grew for each of my 5 ( going on 6 now) children. I think of the love I have for my husband, for my parents, for my friends & family. It feels big but if I'm honest it can run pretty low - especially at the end of a long day when my patience tank is dry and lights in my heart starts flashing red.
But the good news is I am not required to just live a life of love out of the fullness of my own bucket. But like a child building a sand castle, the Lord has given us access to his endless ocean of love. We just need to run back into the ocean and fill from it, time and time again.
